The Annual Report is based on the museum’s strategy and brings together key initiatives and figures that reflect the breadth of the museum’s work across research, collections and public engagement. It also provides insight into how the museum moved significantly closer to the opening of the new museum in spring 2027.
– The annual report shows a museum in development. In 2025, we strengthened our research, expanded our collections and took major steps towards the opening of the new museum, which will bring even more people closer to nature, says Nina Rønsted, Director of Natural History Museum Denmark.
During 2025, the museum welcomed more than 356,000 guests, while the Botanical Garden received more than one million visitors. At the same time, the first of the museum’s 6,500 m² of new galleries began to take shape as work on the future exhibitions moved from the drawing board and into the new museum building.
The report also provides insight into the year’s research and collections work. In 2025, the museum’s researchers described 123 new species and published 201 scientific papers. The museum’s bird ringing programme celebrated its 125th anniversary, while the digitisation of the museum’s collections passed 1.3 million objects, which are now publicly accessible through the museum’s Collections Portal.
Over the course of the year, the museum’s collections grew by more than 100,000 natural history objects, including through the acquisition of Hans Kloster’s mineral collection – Denmark’s largest private mineral collection, containing more than 1,000 mineral species that were not previously represented in the museum’s collections.
2025 also marked several important advances in the museum’s work on sustainability and nature conservation. The Botanical Garden achieved international 'BGCI Conservation Practitioner Accreditation' for its work in plant conservation, while the museum was also awarded the Green Attraction certification for its efforts in sustainability and environmentally responsible operations.
