Night at the Botanical Garden

Bring a torch and explore the Botanical Garden after closing time, as darkness falls and the plants and animals of the night begin to stir.

Saturday 5 September 2026 17.00–21.00

Keep your eyes and nose alert as you search for nocturnal plants with pale blooms and alluring fragrances. Along the way, you may encounter some of the garden's night-time inhabitants, so watch out for fluttering bats, hunting spiders and swarming moths.

At the Botanical Workshop, you can sow and pot your own flowers for moths to take home, or let your imagination run wild by creating your very own hybrid plant.

In the garden's pavilions, you'll come face to face with nocturnal mammals, birds, insects and spiders. Test your knowledge of the sounds of the night, meet our giant model spider, or discover your inner bat with performance artist and species ambassador for the brown long-eared bat, Linh Le. 

This event forms part of Night in Nature, supported by the Danish Outdoor Council. Night in Nature invites people across Denmark to experience the natural world at a time of day that few know well.

The event is also part of the annual cultural history festival Golden Days, which this year explores the theme 'Monsters' in collaboration with more than 100 cultural institutions.

Mini Guided Tours

  • Collect a free ticket for one of our 30-minute guided tours and discover either the fascinating world of nocturnal plants and their pollinators, or learn how the Space for Life project is creating better habitats for plants, animals and fungi.

Plants of the Night

Visit the Botanical Workshop in the Public Engagement Greenhouse and get your hands dirty.

  • Sow and pot your own flowers for moths to take home and grow in your garden or on your balcony..
  • Unleash your creativity in our fantasy herbarium workshop, where you can design your own nocturnal hybrid plant by combining different plant parts on card. Take your creation home to press and dry as a unique herbarium specimen.

Bats

Discover the fascinating world of bats in our Bat Discovery Pavilion.

  • Meet these remarkable nocturnal mammals as researchers and educators present specimens from the museum's collections and introduce the different bat species and their behaviour.
  • Learn how bat detectors convert ultrasonic bat calls into sounds that humans can hear. As dusk falls, we may even pick up the calls of bats flying through the Garden.
  • Join performance artist and species ambassador for the brown long-eared bat, Linh Le, for a series of unique experiences:
    • 17.15–18.00: Listen to bat calls and draw a sonogram (free ticket required)
    • 18.30–19.15: Take part in the poetic meditation 'Transformation into a Bat' (free ticket required)
    • 20.00–20.20: Experience Linh Le's live performance
    • 20.35–21.00: Join a twilight walk through the Garden and watch bats flitting through the evening sky (free ticket required)

Nocturnal Mammals and Birds

Meet some of the mammals and birds that come alive after dark and learn about their remarkable adaptations.

  • Museum educators will present specimens from the museum's collections and share fascinating insights into the lives of nocturnal species.
  • You can also test yourself by matching the sounds of the night to the animals that make them.

Nocturnal Insects and Spiders

Meet some of the insects and spiders that thrive after dark and discover what we can catch in the Botanical Garden using nets and other field equipment.

  • Researchers and educators will showcase specimens from the museum's collections and explain the lives and behaviour of nocturnal insects and arachnids.
  • Watch live collecting demonstrations and see what nocturnal creatures are active in the Garden after sunset.
  • Say hello to our giant model spider
