Sustainability

The Natural History Museum Denmark explores, communicates, and fosters understanding of the diversity and development of nature. Through research, interdisciplinary collaboration and engaging outreach, we work to strengthen both scientific knowledge and the connection between people and nature.

The better we understand nature, the better we can care for it. Therefore, the museum has a clear goal of bringing people closer to nature — creating both awareness and a sense of responsibility through exhibitions, education and outreach.

As a public cultural institution, the museum also has a responsibility to contribute actively to the green transition. We do this by working systematically to reduce our climate footprint, minimise resource consumption and place sustainability requirements on our partners.

Green Attraction

At the beginning of 2025, the Natural History Museum Denmark was awarded the Green Attraction certification — a Danish environmental labelling scheme for attractions. The certification commits the museum to continuously reducing its environmental impact by lowering energy consumption, minimising waste and implementing sustainable operational solutions, amongst other measures.

With the Green Attraction certification, the Natural History Museum Denmark is committed to making the green transition a shared objective across the entire museum and an integral part of daily operations. Among other initiatives, we are working towards:

  • More waste sorting and less waste
Efficient waste management and an increased focus on recycling.

  • Reduction of water and energy consumption
Monitoring and optimisation through sustainable solutions.

  • Limitation of harmful chemicals
Cleaning agents are used thoughtfully, and harmful substances are minimised.

  • Responsible suppliers
Collaboration with suppliers who share the ambition of sustainability.

Charter for the Green Transition of Danish Museums

In addition to the Green Attraction certification, the Natural History Museum Denmark has joined The Association of Danish Museums’ Charter for the Green Transition of Danish Museums. Through this charter, the museum is part of a community of institutions working towards a CO₂-neutral future. Membership obliges the museum to set ambitious goals for the green transition and to work systematically to achieve them.
